February 27, Call to Action

On Tuesday, the House Committee on the Judiciary will vote on H.R. 111, a resolution calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to release all non-classified documents related to Trump's conflicts of interest and ties to Russia. Currently, 67 Members of Congress are signed on to this bill as cosponsors, none of them Republican, of course. This makes our position tough, of course, because we know going into this that Conaway is not going to be the first guy to break ranks with the GOP.

Still, we need to push him to support this investigation and let him know that not supporting a full investigation puts him on the wrong side of history.

Here is a suggested script (provided in part by Indivisible):

Hi, my name is______. I live at ________. I am calling today because I am concerned that Representative Conaway is fine with letting Trump use the Oval Office to enrich himself and his family and fine with possible bribery from foreign governments, like Russia. Donald Trump refuses to completely divest himself from businesses and holdings he has in multiple countries around the world. He refuses to release his tax returns to prove he isn’t beholden to foreign interests. There is also an abundance of evidence that his campaign staff were in frequent communication with Russian officials and that his administration tried to interfere with an FBI investigation into it. This isn’t a partisan issue; it’s about the integrity of the Oval Office and of our democracy. House Resolution 111 would help ensure that Donald Trump is acting on behalf of the American people, not himself or the Russian government.

Call today, or send a postcard (or several).

Friday, February 17th Call to Action

Sorry for missing you the last couple of days. Some good news, our friends over at Indivisible Midland have scheduled a meeting with Representative Conaway. The kicker is that Conaway is only willing to meet with four people, no press, and no public. So, we need to keep putting the pressure on him to have a town hall. When you call today, feel free to add in a request for a town hall.

Our big focus today is pushing Conaway to back the necessary investigation of the White House ties to Russia. Now, most of the GOP, including Conaway would like to ignore the chaos of the White House and just go forward with pushing their legislative agendas through (every one of them more terrible than the last). We can't let them get away with that, so while we continue to resist their dangerous agenda, we also need to push them to do the right thing.

Today, we're calling on Conaway (432-687-2390) to support a comprehensive investigation of Trump's ties to Russia, headed by an independent Special Prosecutor. Here is a suggested script:

"Hello, my name is __________. I am Representative Conaway's constituent. My zip code is ____________. I am calling to urge Representative Conaway to support an investigation of the White House's ties to Russia. As an America, I am deeply troubled by the mounting evidence of the White House's relationship with Russia, a hostile foreign power. Senator Cornyn has called for an investigation, and I hope that Representative Conaway will be sensible about this as well. There are too many warning signs, and I fear our national security is at stake, if it hasn't already been compromised. Thank you."

Tuesday, February 14, Call to Action

We're still focusing on Rep. Conaway today, so if you missed the chance to call him yesterday to tell him you OPPOSE HR 474, you can add that in when you call today.

Since it's Valentine's Day, we're asking Conaway to show a little love and give us a town hall in Midland or Odessa to meet his constituents here. When we met him in Stanton on January 17th, he said he'd schedule a town hall in the near future. Well, he hasn't. So, let's remind him of his promise and demand that he meet his constituents!

Conaway's Odessa Office: (432) 331-9667

Remember, when you call, be polite.

Monday, February 13th, Call to Action:

This week we're going to focus our attention on U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, District 11. This is timely, since it's this week that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be taking public comments on the proposal to store high-level nuclear waste in Andrews, TX.

How is Conaway involved?
Conaway has paired up with Rep. Issa of California to propose the Interim Consolidated Storage Act, HR 474

Why are we opposed to this?
This act would allow for the storage of high-level nuclear waste in Andrews County, TX. To get to Andrews, this waste--spent fuel rods from nuclear reactors--would travel through Midland and Odessa, putting lives and health at risk if an accident were to occur in transit.

What's the argument?
Conaway will say that we have to move the waste, because the nuclear facilities are running out of room to store it. He'll also argue that it's safer to have the waste stored in one consolidated location in case terrorists get it in their heads to try and steal some to use in an attack. The former claim is flat out wrong. The nuclear facilities are not running out of room to store the waste. The latter claim maybe sounds good, but since the waste is currently stored at highly secure facilities in areas with tons of police and military presence, it hardly seems feasible that a small company in Andrews is going to be able to match that level of security.

How can you help?
Start by calling Rep. Mike Conaway's office and tell him you OPPOSE HR 474, the Interim Consolidated Storage Act at his local office 432-687-2390

If you can, also attend one of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's public hearings:
Monday, February 13th, Lea County Events Center, 5101 N. Lovington Highway, Hobbs, NM 7-10 (MST)
Wednesday, February 15th, James Roberts Center, 855 Broadway, Andrews, TX 7-10 (CST)
